Protege Athletes/Coaches Making Headlines
Jessica Mendoza, Natasha Watley and Katie Smith of Protege Sports
Protege athletes Jessica Mendoza and Natasha Watley will be representing our country on the USA softball team while Katie Smith will be leading the women’s basketball team in the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing starting on August 8th. Mendoza, Watley & Smith are all members of the Protégé Sports online community and each have filmed numerous instructional video clips for the website. Mendoza and Watley have been USA team members since 2001 and 2002 respectively. Both played a vital role in the USA winning gold during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Smith won gold with the basketball team in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic games.
Mendoza is a 2002 graduate of Stanford University and a four-time first team All-American. She was named Softball Player of the Year in 2006 and has been a board member with the Women’s Sports Foundation and the NEA Foundation.
A product of UCLA in 2005, Watley set numerous school records while a bruin including hits (395), runs scored (252), at-bats (878), triples (21) and stolen bases (158). Her 158 stolen bases is more than triple that of the second-best total (51 by Olympic Gold Medalist Amanda Freed).
Smith has been playing professional basketball in the ABL and WNBA since 1997. She was a member of the WNBA All-Decade Team and won a WNBA Title with the Detroit Shock in 2006. Smith has been a member of the USA basketball program since 1993.
